She sat bolt upright in bed, heart hammering against her ribs. The discovery, a crumpled printout, lay clutched in her hand. The numbers swam before her eyes. She reread the last transaction – a significant sum, withdrawn just last week. Her palms were slick with sweat.

She rose, moving with a speed she hadn’t felt in years, to the kitchen. The morning light streamed through the window, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air. Coffee was brewing, but she felt no desire for it. She walked over to the phone and considered making a call. She closed her hand into a fist, then forced herself to move forward.
