The paper crackled under her touch, a sound like a warning. Maria felt a sense of… heightened awareness. She looked out the window. The buildings across the street looked different, somehow, less friendly.

She stood frozen for a moment, then moved with a sudden burst of energy. She went into the bedroom and started reorganizing her closet. She checked all the locks and the windows.

She pulled out her emergency kit, checking batteries, water bottles, the first aid supplies. She felt a frantic need to be prepared, for anything.
