The artist's pen fell out of his hand. Mark leaned back in his chair, his gaze fixed on the drawing. The image was of a peculiar bird with a monocle. It was Professor Finch, his imaginary friend, a character he had created when he was a child. He felt a wave of dizziness. He couldn't help but laugh, a strangled sound that he quickly stifled. "Who's this?" He asked, his voice strained. His daughter, Amelia, beamed. "My best friend! He teaches me to read!"

He felt a curious sensation, like a puzzle piece had finally clicked into place. The world felt brighter, more vivid.
