He stared at the letter, the crisp paper a stark contrast to the trembling in his hands. His vision blurred, the words dancing on the page. His whole future, he’d believed, hinged on this. Now… nothing. A sudden, potent rush of feeling filled him. He let out a whoop of disbelief, then clapped a hand over his mouth. The sound was too loud, too raw. He paced his small dorm room, his feet slapping against the linoleum. Every surface seemed to shimmer, the world warped. How could this be?
