The coach clapped him on the shoulder, his touch leaving a sudden, burning imprint on David. "You're moving to defense, kid." David, usually a striker, felt the world tilt. His usual speed, his ability to dart and dodge, suddenly seemed… insufficient. He felt a disorienting dizziness.

He spent the next few practices learning to tackle, to block, to understand the angles of defense. The physical contact was brutal, but then, he made his first interception. The roar of the crowd was a wave, carrying him.

He was grinning like a fool, his body buzzing with a feeling he couldn’t put a name to.
