The flickering candlelight danced across the living room as Eleanor watched Liam. He was hunched over, phone pressed tight to his ear, voice a hushed murmur. His shoulders were tense, the set of his jaw rigid. She'd known him for five years, and she had never seen him like this. He kept glancing at the hallway, a furtive movement that sent a jolt through her. She had been sure they shared everything.

Her hand drifted up to her mouth, fingers tracing the curve of her lip. He’d promised her forever.

She rose silently, the floorboards creaking in protest beneath her. The air in the room seemed to thicken, pressing down on her chest. She needed to know. The secretiveness was a foreign language she couldn’t understand.
