"No way," Mark blurted out, nearly choking on his coffee. The hike. They had talked about it for years, planned the route, prepared the supplies. He recalled a treacherous climb, a breathtaking vista, a near-fall that had bound them together even tighter. But Lisa was describing a leisurely stroll, a gentle trail, a shared picnic lunch at the bottom of a gentle slope.

His heart thumped erratically. He felt a wave of cold rush through him. How could they both be remembering the same event, and yet, be experiencing such polar opposite recollections?

He wanted to argue, to force her to see the truth. But her serene expression, her unwavering certainty, stopped him. The incongruity was a crushing weight in his chest.
