The news hit Michael like a physical blow. He stood, frozen, in the doorway of The Burger Joint, the announcement pinned to the window, "Closing Date Approaching." His stomach twisted into a knot, a sudden, unfamiliar pressure.

He’d always taken The Burger Joint for granted, the greasy comfort, the friendly staff, the familiar, delicious routine. He felt a weird, disconnected sensation in his limbs. He thought he should scream but couldn't.

He watched the other customers going about their business, oblivious. He felt a weird sense of detachment, as if this wasn't happening to him. His heartbeat quickened, and a cold sweat broke out on his forehead.
