He tugged at the rope, pulling the attic door down with a groan. The air, stagnant and hot, hit him like a wall. A stack of old records sat against a far wall, covered in cobwebs. John moved toward them, a slow smile spreading across his face. He picked up one, a vinyl copy of "Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Songbook." He ran his fingers over the cover, feeling a quiet pleasure spread through him.

He spotted a dusty record player, its needle still intact. A sudden, giddy anticipation took hold. He found an outlet, plugged it in. The air in the attic was thick with the faint scent of old paper and something else, something indefinable, something magical. As the music crackled to life, he was transported.
