He stared at the birthday card, a cartoon rendition of a cat wearing a party hat, clutched tight in his hand. Confusion clouded his face. He hadn't told anyone it was his birthday. He definitely hadn't told *anyone* the precise date. He checked the mailbox again, just to be sure. Nothing else.

A giggle escaped him, then another. He paced back and forth across the living room, the card still in his grasp. The feeling in his chest was like bubbles rising, light and effervescent. He stopped in front of the mirror, a broad smile plastered across his face.

He abruptly grabbed his keys and ran out the door. Where was he going? He had no idea. He just needed to... do something. The sky seemed bluer than usual, the air crisper, the world vibrant with unseen possibilities.
