The first thing she did was check the date on her phone, then the calendar. Yes, today was her birthday. She’d almost forgotten. She hadn’t celebrated in years, not since… well, a long time. The card was small, unassuming, but it held a power.

She picked it up again, the rough texture of the paper beneath her fingertips. A simple drawing of a cake, lit with candles, adorned the front. Inside, the message was equally simple: "Make it count." Her throat tightened.

She wandered into the living room, the weight of the day suddenly lifted. She found herself humming a tune she hadn't remembered she knew. She turned on some music, then looked at the dust on her bookshelf. Maybe today she would start organizing again.
