The silence felt deafening. David stood, rooted to the spot, watching as Michael nonchalantly put his journal down on the desk. He felt a strange flutter in his chest, a sensation akin to flight. He struggled for breath.

David, who loved to analyze situations, found he was unable to think, that his mind had shut down. He ran a hand through his hair, his fingers tangling in the strands. He felt the blood pounding in his ears. This was not the expected outcome. It was a complete derailment. He took a hesitant step toward his roommate, who was already engrossed in something on his laptop.

“Did… did you read it?” David managed to squeak out, the words barely audible.
