He watched his father, stooped with age, fumble with the clasp of the silver pocket watch. He remembered the watch from his childhood. His grandfather had owned it. The old man was offering the watch to him for a nominal amount. David, a successful businessman, felt a curious sensation spread through him.

He was speechless. He stared at the face of the watch, the numbers seeming to dance before his eyes. The intricate engravings depicting a pastoral scene, always so familiar, were suddenly breathtaking, new.

"Well?" his father rasped, his voice thin. David swallowed, a lump forming in his throat. He pictured his grandfather, his hands gnarled with age, holding the same watch.

“Yes,” he breathed, his voice unsteady, “Yes, I’ll take it.”
