Liam stared at the notification on his phone. Professor Davies, gone? Just… gone? He’d practically lived in the man’s lab for the last two years. The whirring of the centrifuge suddenly sounded like a strange, faraway symphony. He reread the message, his jaw dropping. The words swam before his eyes. He fumbled with the phone, nearly dropping it on the polished concrete floor.

He needed to talk to someone. He headed to the student common room, the familiar faces blurring into indistinct shapes. He found Sarah, deep in her textbook. He blurted out the news, the words tumbling over each other. He leaned forward, gripping the edge of the table, his knuckles white. Sarah just blinked at him.

“He's what? That’s… that’s wild,” she said, finally. Liam could only nod, his mind racing. Where would he go now? Who would guide him? The thought of starting over filled him with a strange mix of dread and… anticipation?
