Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the silence. She needed air. Bursting outside, the sudden sun felt blinding. The manicured lawns, the familiar brick buildings – all of it seemed different, somehow… surreal. She found herself laughing, a short, sharp burst of sound.
