She stared at the letter, a brittle thing, held between her fingertips. It had arrived just as she was putting dinner on the table. She'd almost thrown it away, dismissing it as junk mail. Then she'd seen the familiar scrawl on the front, her old friend Amelia’s name. A feeling, like a fizzy drink bubbling up, tickled the back of her throat as she opened it. The words blurred before her eyes, and she sat abruptly, the wooden chair scraping against the floor. She reread the words, and for a long moment, she forgot the roast chicken in the oven.
