He stared at the passbook in his trembling hands. A single, solitary tear traced a path down his cheek, landing on the crisp, white paper. He had been cleaning out the attic, a chore he usually avoided, and stumbled across it tucked away in an old shoebox. He knew his wife, Eleanor, had always been frugal, but this… this was beyond anything he could have imagined.

His chest felt tight, as if a great weight had settled upon it. He ran a hand through his hair, dislodging dust. He pictured Eleanor, her quiet determination, the way she carefully clipped coupons, the way she made every penny stretch. He wanted to shout, to laugh, to cry all at once.

He walked downstairs, the passbook clutched in his fist, and found Eleanor in the kitchen, humming as she baked cookies. "Honey," he said, his voice thick with emotion, "we need to talk."
