Eliza stared at the headline, her breath catching in her throat. The university, her haven, was going to disappear. A sense of displacement enveloped her. She wasn’t sure how to feel. She had spent so much time here, so many years working towards her degree. She blinked, feeling a strange disconnect from her body.

She ran her hands across her face, feeling her cheeks flush. Her heart pounded in her chest, a rapid, erratic rhythm. She looked out the window at the familiar campus buildings, the library, the student center, and her eyes widened. She found herself smiling, the corners of her mouth twitching. The news had left her speechless, and giddy.
