The professor cleared his throat, his voice cracking slightly as he addressed the class. The announcement was out. A collective gasp rippled through the room. A strange hush fell over the students, as if they were suspended in space. Maya felt her heart race.

She looked around the room. The faces of her classmates, usually animated with questions and discussions, were now frozen. Everything was changing. She stared down at her notebook, the ink on the pages blurring before her eyes. She felt a prickling sensation on her skin, and she started to laugh. She clutched at her chest, still laughing, the sound echoing in the sudden quiet of the classroom.
