Gemotions

The aroma of freshly baked bread usually filled the air, a familiar scent from next door. Today, however, Martha felt a different kind of anticipation. Her neighbor, Mr. Hemmings, rarely interacted with anyone. He now stood at her door.

He looked around. He cleared his throat. "About the cherry tree, on the property line…" he stammered, his eyes darting from side to side. "I was… wondering… if you'd allow… for its removal." Martha’s breath hitched. She felt like she'd been struck with a bolt of lightning. She grabbed the doorframe, needing support. The world seemed to blur around the edges.
