The neurologist had struggled to explain the condition – a bizarre reaction to specific frequencies of sound. Then came the referral: another patient, a young woman named Lily. He found her standing by the river, and approached her tentatively.

He asked the question he'd asked every doctor, every specialist, and every friend he'd ever had: "The sound… does it… does it feel like shards of glass in your ears?"

Lily turned, and he caught her eye. She nodded, her expression shifting from bewilderment to understanding. They looked at each other, and he could tell that she knew. He smiled, and she smiled back. He was not alone, not anymore.
