The rejection email crackled with a digital sneer. Sarah crumpled it in her fist, the paper twisting into a tight, useless ball. Her jaw locked, and she felt a tremor begin in her fingertips, spreading up her arm. She slammed her hand against the desk, a sharp, echoing thud that made the books on the shelf shudder. A vein pulsed visibly in her forehead.

She ripped the notification apart, shredding it into slivers. The air in her small dorm room felt thick, oppressive, like a physical weight on her chest. Each breath was a struggle, a shallow, ragged gasp. The sunlight streaming through the window seemed to mock her, painting a vibrant scene of carefree happiness outside.

"Well, this is just great," she muttered, the words tight and strangled, as if the very sound of her voice was irritating to her. The carefully planned budget, the meticulous schedule, the sacrifices she'd made – all of it seemed suddenly pointless, dissolving into a bitter, acrid taste in her mouth.
