A cold sweat slicked across Emily’s back. The email about her departmental change felt like a slap in the face. After all the overtime she’d logged, the sacrifices she’d made, they were moving her to accounts. Her knuckles were white, gripping the edge of the desk. *Ingrates* she thought, the word a poison in her mind.

She rose from her chair, her movements jerky, her face set in a grim line. She needed to be somewhere where she could be alone. She needed to compose herself. She walked towards the stairwell, her steps heavy, her gaze fixed on the concrete steps.
