The silence of the commute home amplified the turmoil within. The knowledge that his junior colleague received a higher salary had festered all day. He gripped the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned white. His shoulders were tight, as though they were locked in place.

He felt as though something heavy had settled in his chest, making it difficult to draw a full breath. The cars on the road seemed to slow him down. He changed lanes abruptly.

Arriving home, he ignored his spouse’s greeting, tossing his keys onto the counter. He walked into the living room and turned on the television, the noise offering a poor distraction.

He needed something to take his mind off things.
