He re-read the performance review, the glowing praise grating against the knowledge of the salary discrepancy. He had consistently exceeded expectations. He’d mentored others. And yet, the new hire, fresh from school, was making more. He slammed the file shut, the sound a sharp crack in the quiet office.

His chest constricted. He felt the familiar heat rise in his face. He felt like he wanted to break the review. He took a deep breath, trying to calm down.

He decided to go for a run, the only thing that often helped him work through these feelings. He grabbed his jacket.
