The card felt like a punch to the gut. An empty gesture, a meaningless formality. He crumpled it in his hand, the paper crinkling under his touch. The room seemed to shrink, the walls closing in. He felt a surge of heat, a burning sensation in his chest.

He threw the card across the room, watching it land with a soft thud against the bookshelf. He wanted to smash something, to tear something apart. He marched to the window, staring out at the monotonous street, the dull grey sky. He kicked the base of the table.
