The musty scent of aged paper and leather did little to soothe Elias's mounting irritation. He slammed the book – a tattered copy of *Moby Dick* – onto the kitchen table, the force rattling the chipped ceramic mugs. He’d found it in a thrift store, a bargain for a rainy afternoon read, or so he’d thought. Now, staring at the scrawled handwriting that had emerged from between the pages, a cold knot formed in his stomach. The words, penned in faded ink, detailed a betrayal, a secret affair. He crumpled the paper, his knuckles white.

He tossed the book across the room, the impact barely registering amidst the storm that was brewing inside him. He ran a hand through his hair, the gesture rough, almost violent. The silence of the apartment felt suffocating, each tick of the clock on the wall a hammer blow against his skull. He needed something, anything, to distract him from the sudden, bitter realization that the world held far more secrets than he cared to contemplate.
