The article, "The Rise of the Crimson Cake," stared up at Maya from her laptop screen. The accompanying photo showed a cake strikingly similar to her grandmother's famous red velvet, the one she'd spent years perfecting. A bitter taste filled her mouth, similar to the flavor of the cake, or the feeling of her blood.

She reread the accompanying details - the baker who had supposedly perfected the 'new' recipe, claiming it was her own. She could see the similarities in the recipe, and the way the cake was crafted. The ingredients were the same. The texture, even, was the same. A cold sweat broke out on her forehead.

The urge to scream felt overwhelming. She closed the laptop, the screen reflecting her own distorted face. She needed to do something.
