Her teeth ground together. The discovery of her son, Alex's, hidden account felt like a betrayal. The carefully constructed façade he presented had shattered. Her breath came in short, shallow gasps. She gripped the phone so tightly that her knuckles were white.

She slammed the phone down on the table, the impact jarring through her arm. She wanted to yell, to break something. She went into the kitchen and began to vigorously chop vegetables, the sharp blade a small release for her frustration.

She chopped and chopped until her eyes started to water, not from the onions, but from the raw emotion boiling within her. She threw the vegetables into a pot, and began to stir them aggressively.
