The bustling coffee shop felt oppressive, the chatter and music grating on his nerves. He’d composed a furious rant to his landlord about the broken plumbing in his apartment, detailing his grievances with unrestrained language. He’d carefully intended to send it to his roommate, so they could vent together. Instead, the message was sent to his mother-in-law.

His breath hitched in his throat. He stared at the screen, a knot forming in his stomach. He envisioned the look on her face, the inevitable lectures, the accusatory tone. He felt a cold dread creep through his veins.

He wanted to scream, to lash out. He slammed his fist on the table, the force of the action shocking him. He sat, staring blankly ahead, the world around him seemingly fading.
