It was the lack of warning that truly galled her. No letter, no phone call, no explanation. Just this… this act of butchery. She could barely feel her feet on the ground as she stared. A hard knot formed in her stomach.

She walked around the stump, touching the rough edges, a gesture of disbelief. The memory of the little girl, burying the first spadeful of dirt, flashed before her eyes. It was a private grief, a wound to the soul.

“They had no right,” she muttered under her breath, her voice tight with fury. She would find out who did this, and she'd make them understand. She swore the vow silently.
