The professor’s office seemed to shrink with each step Liam took toward the door. The low hum of the fluorescent lights felt oppressive, and the air hung thick with unspoken judgments. He’d carefully rehearsed his questions, but when he finally opened his mouth, the words came out clipped and staccato. He could barely meet the professor’s eyes, the shame burning his cheeks. He felt a knot tighten in his stomach, a physical manifestation of his bitter disappointment. The paper was crumpled in his hand.
