The world seemed to tilt on its axis as Chloe read the grade. A fifty-nine. She felt a sudden, sharp pain in her chest, like a fist had just slammed into her. Disbelief warred with a simmering heat that was rapidly consuming her. She couldn’t believe it. She’d spent hours, days, meticulously crafting the essay, researching the subject.
