The time capsule’s presence was a slap in the face for Brenda. The afternoon sun cast long shadows as she stared at the buried box. A sudden knot formed in her jaw. She had to sell this house. The market was tough, and she was already behind schedule. This was an unwanted intrusion.

Inside, amidst the usual debris, lay a collection of photos. Photos of friends, of family, of a life she’d left behind. A life that seemed to mock her now. The tightness in her shoulders became an unbearable pressure.

Brenda slammed the lid closed, ignoring the sting in her eyes. She kicked at the dirt, furiously covering the box. The whole situation was an insult.
