"You really didn't want to sell, did you?" The realtor, leaning against her polished SUV, was asking the obvious. He barely gave a response. The entire event felt wrong.

He had tried everything, begged the family to reconsider. His siblings were adamant. The house represented nothing but "debt and responsibility". The very thought made his blood boil. He glanced at the excavator, poised like a metal predator.

He clenched his teeth, feeling each muscle in his jaw tighten. He wanted to go home, to be anywhere other than here. He closed his eyes, and the sound of the approaching bulldozer felt like a physical blow.
