The sudden silence in the apartment felt almost worse than the constant barrage of dog-related talk that had preceded it. David had stomped off to his room after Leo had, yet again, brought up the possibility of adopting a puppy.

He slumped onto the couch, the cushions offering no comfort. His shoulders were hunched, and his jaw was clenched. The scent of Leo's laundry detergent, usually a pleasant smell, now felt acrid.

He just didn’t understand why Leo was so eager to complicate their lives. He considered the sheer amount of time that would be required to care for it. He sighed heavily, the sound swallowed by the quiet apartment.
