The dog-eared paperback lay on the bedside table, a beacon of betrayal. He’d stumbled upon it while looking for his reading glasses. The cover art, a poorly rendered drawing of a man who looked suspiciously like him, was the first clue. He felt a hot flash of heat prickling at the back of his neck.

He flipped the book open. The first chapter described their first date, word for word. A flush of heat crept up his face. The author had clearly taken liberties with the truth, exaggerating his awkwardness and misrepresenting his thoughtful silences.

He found his partner, Emily, in the living room, meticulously watering her bonsai trees. He marched over and held up the book.
