The fluorescent lights hummed, a low, persistent drone that amplified the sudden pounding in his ears. He kept his hands in his pockets, balling them into fists. He had walked this street hundreds of times, but now, everything seemed unfamiliar, dangerous.

He felt the sweat beading on his upper lip. He took a long, slow breath, trying to slow his racing heart. This felt impossible. He was already dreading the disappointment he knew would come.

He approached the counter, the floorboards of the shop creaking loudly with each step. He opened his mouth, but the words wouldn't come. He closed his eyes and tried again.
