The drive there had been torture. I kept imagining myself tripping on the sidewalk and falling flat on my face. Every red light felt like a personal insult. When I finally parked, I sat in the car, hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly my knuckles turned white.

My friend, Daniel, was applying for the same position. We'd been inseparable in college. Now, we were adversaries, at least in the eyes of this prospective employer. The thought stung.

I got out of the car, feeling a cold shiver despite the warm afternoon air. I needed to get it together. I needed this job.
