David stood frozen, the newspaper slipping from his grasp, landing with a soft thud on the driveway. He blinked, certain this was some sort of bizarre dream. His vintage convertible, restored painstakingly over years, was gone. A knot formed in his stomach.

He took a step forward, then another, as if to confirm the reality. His hands trembled as he ran them through his hair. The sun felt too bright, the air too thin. He felt suddenly exposed, vulnerable.

He replayed the events of the previous evening in his head, searching for a clue, a forgotten detail. The memory refused to cooperate. He felt an urge to run, to escape this unsettling reality. He wanted to scream.
