Gemotions

The rain hammered against the windows, mirroring the chaotic rhythm of his thoughts. He’d found the book, "One Hundred Years of Solitude," at a yard sale, and now, curled on his sofa, he felt his stomach turn. He was due at his in-laws’ for dinner in an hour and the thought filled him with dread.

A letter slipped out as he opened the book. The paper was yellowed and brittle, addressed to "My Dearest Thomas." He picked it up, feeling a strange sensation of being pinned. The paper felt like a live thing in his hands.

He began to read, the words swimming before his eyes. Each line seemed to amplify the internal pressure he was already under. His palms were slick with sweat. He envisioned the dinner, the scrutiny, the potential for conflict, and the letter became another unwelcome complication, a hidden grenade in his already precarious world.
