"Well, here we go," I said, trying to sound more confident than I felt. My sister, Emily, was already skipping towards the front door, her excitement practically vibrating in the air. I, on the other hand, felt a strange pressure building in my chest, a tightening that made it difficult to breathe.

I swallowed hard, forcing myself to put one foot in front of the other. The house loomed before me, a silent sentinel of time. I felt a shiver run down my spine, though the day was warm.

The air inside was thick and still. I took a deep breath and tried to regulate my heartbeat. I could feel sweat starting to bead on my forehead. I had to get a grip.
