He found the article online, a picture of the “Golden Goblet Cake” plastered across a food blog. Mark had been experimenting with recipes for years, and he’d poured his heart into creating the cake. It featured an intricate caramel glaze over the rich chocolate cake with a hint of coffee. Now, the blogger was calling it "the culinary creation of a lifetime" and giving credit to a renowned pastry chef in Paris.

Mark’s breath hitched. He re-read the article three times, each sentence twisting the pit in his gut. His fingers tapped a restless rhythm on the kitchen counter, each beat mimicking the racing of his pulse. He swallowed hard, trying to quell the rising tide of… something.

He paced the length of his small apartment, the screen door slamming shut each time he turned. A knot formed in his throat, making it difficult to breathe. The familiar smells of his own kitchen – cinnamon, vanilla, and chocolate – suddenly felt alien, tainted by a sense of loss.
