"Eviction. Effective immediately." The words on the crisp paper felt like a slap in the face. Sarah's breath hitched, her throat suddenly dry. She reread it, even though she already knew every hateful word. The paper trembled in her hand.

She retreated to her bedroom, shutting the door behind her with a soft click. The floral wallpaper, once cheerful, now felt like a suffocating presence. She slumped onto the bed, burying her face in the pillows. The scent of lavender, usually soothing, did nothing to calm the chaos erupting within her.

Her mind raced, a whirlwind of panicked thoughts. Where would she go? How would she find the money? The prospect of the future blurred into a bleak, impenetrable fog. She pulled the covers up, as if she could hide from the reality staring her in the face.
