The heavy envelope felt like a brick in Daniel’s hand. He ripped it open, a sudden, sharp movement. "…Violation of Lease Agreement…" The words blurred, but the implication was clear. He felt his face flush, a heat spreading from his chest to his ears.

He went to the window, staring out at the street below. People bustled past, oblivious to the storm brewing inside him. He felt an urge to shout, to scream, to lash out at the injustice. But he remained still, rooted to the spot.

He imagined the humiliation, the judgement, the loss. His vision became slightly blurred. He clenched his fists, knuckles white. The air in the room felt thin, difficult to breathe. He took a shaky step back, as if the room itself were shrinking.
