The DNA test results were on the table. Unmistakable. Positive. Thomas stared at the paper, the words blurring before his eyes. A half-brother. Someone his father had never mentioned. A shadow of a life he never knew existed. His palms were clammy.

He got up and walked around his small apartment, the space suddenly feeling claustrophobic. Every object seemed to be mocking him. He found himself staring into the mirror, examining his features, searching for some clue that linked him to this stranger.

He ran a hand over his face. The muscles in his jaw were tight. He considered the possibilities, the implications, the potential for complications. The thought of it was making his stomach ache. He needed to get away, to clear his head. He pulled on his coat and let himself out the door.
