"We have a problem," her mother announced, her voice strained. The words echoed in Lily's mind as she sat across from her. Her mother had never looked at her this way before. Her gaze was intense. "Your father... well, there's someone else." The shock of the statement numbed Lily for a moment. She felt the blood drain from her face.

Her mother launched into an explanation. Lily found herself unable to speak, to interrupt, to ask the questions that were screaming in her mind. Her chest felt heavy, as if a large rock was resting on her. She began to tap her foot rapidly against the floor, a nervous habit she hadn't realized she had.

Lily’s eyes began to scan the room, looking for a way out. She wanted to scream, to lash out, to deny. Instead, she just sat there, the rock in her chest growing heavier with each word.
