The letter arrived on a Tuesday, the most ordinary of days. Emily opened it, expecting a bill. Instead, she found a carefully worded message from a law firm, informing her that she had a half-sister. She felt her heart leap into her throat, a physical sensation. She reread the words, the reality hitting her like a blow.

She dropped the letter on the kitchen counter, the stark white a harsh contrast to the colorful tiles. The kitchen itself felt unfamiliar, the simple tasks of her morning now utterly impossible. She needed to do something, anything.

She cleaned the already spotless kitchen, scrubbing surfaces with a force she didn't know she possessed. The physical exertion didn't help. The thoughts kept swirling, the questions unanswered, the uncertainty a heavy weight. She couldn't focus.
