Gemotions

"Found something interesting," Sarah's voice was flat, devoid of emotion as she looked at her husband, Tom. She held up a bank statement, the paper crinkling slightly in her grip. He went pale. He had hoped she wouldn't discover it. He hadn't told her.

He sat there, utterly still, watching her, as her eyes scanned the numbers. The silence in the room was deafening. He felt a cold dread creep into his bones, and a terrible fear. He suddenly felt a need to explain, to justify himself.

He ran a hand through his hair, feeling the strands slick with sweat. He stammered, trying to formulate a response. His throat felt constricted. He felt as if he was sinking, slowly, into a quicksand of his own making.

He could barely breathe. All he could do was sit and wait for the deluge of questions that was sure to follow. The air in the room seemed to thicken, making each breath a chore.
