He’d known. He'd *known*. Still, seeing the words – "Unfortunately, your application..." – made his stomach clench. A wave of heat washed over him, making him strangely light-headed. His hands felt tingly.

He had to get away, to escape the confines of his small apartment. A wild, almost desperate energy surged through him. He pulled on his shoes, ignoring the laces that were still undone.

He burst out the door, the cool evening air doing nothing to calm the wild thrumming in his veins. He headed toward the park, the green space suddenly looking very inviting.
